ABOUT

Earth Roots Renewables Corporation develops geothermal energy by repurposing inactive oil and gas wells to deliver reliable, long-term renewable power Many abandoned, orphaned and suspended wells pass through subsurface zones of geothermal heat — a clean, low-cost and continuous energy resource accessed by building on existing oil and gas expertise, infrastructure and subsurface technologies.

At Earth Roots Renewables, we focus on using geothermal heat for electricity and to stabilize intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. When paired with thermal energy storage systems — including molten-sand or liquid-salt batteries capable of retaining heat through extreme cold — energy systems can become consistent, dependable and resilient year-round.

Our work is intended to be developed in collaboration with Indigenous communities, respecting Indigenous rights, knowledge systems and stewardship of land, and recognizing the importance of early, meaningful partnership in project development.

Canada has more than 400,000 inactive oil and gas wells, releasing over 230 kilotonnes of methane each year. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that traps heat, dries soils and poses significant safety risks. For wells not viable for geothermal development, permanent capping offers the fastest and most affordable way to reduce methane emissions and support Canada’s net-zero goals.

Earth Roots Renewables developed Methane Monster Quest, a public-facing initiative designed to identify, fund and cap the methane-leaking wells that are unsuitable for geothermal use.

Founded in 2025, Earth Roots Renewables is driven by creativity, technical expertise and the belief that practical innovation can both cut emissions and strengthen Canada’s clean energy future.
